western fwy, 2019

western fwy is a visual investigation that takes the form of a series of pictures taken over multiple journeys to find the discarded leftovers from the human constructed environment along the Western Freeway M8. It pays particular attention to incidental, unauthored sculptures of detritus amongst industrial landscapes, road stops and new housing estates that dot the freeway.

The Western Freeway dual carriageways between Melbourne and Ballarat were first constructed in the late 1960’s through to the 1970’s, bypassing towns such as Melton, Rockbank and Bacchus Marsh. Closer to Melbourne, its landscape is a mixture of remnant native grasslands combined with heavy and light industry.

The work currently comprises approximately thirty images, an accompanying book, as well as archival historical images of the freeway and iphone screen shots of google maps. The work is anthropological in nature, documenting the evidence of a site of vehicular transit.
